Abortion Saved Me
I was 15 the first time I got pregnant, living in a tent on the side of a mountain with my partner, who was much older than me, 29.
I was too naive to see the power imbalance and how easily I could be manipulated at this age by a full-fledged adult.
He lied and told me that he couldn't possibly have children, something about a sperm count or injury. We didn't use protection because I believed him. Sure enough, because he didn't want to pull out, I became pregnant.
I lived in a town in BC where the unemployment rate was very high, and I had absolutely zero prospects for a job or a home. I genuinely don't know what could have happened to me if I had to keep the pregnancy.
Half of the time, I couldn't even feed myself, let alone feed someone else... raise a baby on the streets and go through the trauma of having them taken away and the physical trauma of a teen pregnancy.
Not to mention, I would be tied to this awful person forever. He ended up being very violent and unstable. It took me being nearly choked to death before I left.
If I hadn't had an abortion, I would have been left with nowhere to go with a 1-year-old as a 16-year-old.
I would have had to maintain a relationship with the man who tried to kill me as the father of my child.
I might never have been able to or had the strength to leave.
I thank the stars and the medical system in Canada that I was able to walk away and build a life for myself without that situation at an early age negatively affecting all of my opportunities and life choices.
Abortion saves lives.
